1. Getting There:

There are 2 airports in Belfast; Belfast International Airport (20 miles from city centre)  and Belfast City Airport (5 miles from city centre). There are buses or taxies to the city centre from each airport.

Flights to Belfast are available from:

Easyjet (Liverpool, London[Gatwick, Luton or Standsted], Glasgow and Edinburgh)
British Midland
British Airways (London Heathrow to Belfast City airport)
AerArann (Cork)

Flying to Dublin (Ryanair, Aer Lingus, lots of others) is also possible and better for international connections (but going via London is also an option). Belfast is 100 miles away (2 hours on the train from Dublin city centre) but it is also possible to get a bus directly from Dublin airport to Belfast city centre (Europa bus centre). This direct bus takes approx 2.5 hours.

2. Around Belfast & The Competition Venue:

The competition venue is in Stranmillis, a leafy suburb of Belfast just south of the university district. It is about 6 km south of the city centre.

4. Competition Rules:

The following rules will be in force for the competition:

  • The competition will be played with DBM version 3.0, the authors' official clarifications and the IWF clarifications for DBM in force at the time of the competition.

  • Armies will be a maximum of 400AP.

  • Any list from the 2nd Edition DBM Army List Books 1-4 and the authors' official errata can be used.

  • Scoring will be 0-10 as per the rule book with +100VP for a player who demoralises an opponent's army and does not have their own army demoralised i.e. who wins the game.

  • There will be team competitions held in parallel with the main event in accordance with the General Rules of the Celtic Championship.

  • Players must bring their own terrain, basemats will be provided.

  • Players must send their army list for checking before entering the competition, the list-checker is Rob Brennan (brennanr@iworg.com). The deadline for reception of lists is the 11th of March. Players submitting late lists will not be eligible for the door prize and lists that are more than 2 weeks late may have additional penalties.

  • Late lists may be penalised with a deduction from your total victory points at the end of the competition. Please help us by submitting on time.

  • The competition will have 5 rounds, one on Friday night and two on both Saturday and Sunday.

  • The DBM weather and time of day rules must be played if at least one of the players in a game wishes to do so.

  • Games will be 3.5 or 3.75 hours +/- 15 minutes in duration. When time is called:

    •  if 12 full bounds have already been played no further moves (other than as combat outcomes) can be performed and the current round's combat phase must be completed. Please note that this means there is no guaranteed last bound for a defender.

    • if less than 12 full bounds have been played then finish the current player bound normally and then the game goes into "blitz" mode. Call an umpire (or their nominee) to adjudicate time, rules and perform spontanious/flee moves. Now play sufficient bounds under blitz so that 12 full bounds are completed. Players have 1 minute from the time their dice land to perform all voluntary moves during their turn.

  • There will be a non-playing umpire who will only play against the lowest scoring player if there is an odd number players for the current round.

  • Players will be paired randomly in round 1, there is no seeding.

  • As far as possible, no player will be paired against another of the same regional affiliation for the first two rounds.

  • FIDE Swiss chess rules will otherwise be used to pair players after the first round.

  • If two players or teams are on the same final score at the end of the competition then a countback mechanism will be used to separate them if it is for a prize-winning position otherwise they will place equally.

  • The countback used for teams will be the sum of all team-members' opponent's scores and then highest number of 10-0 results.

  • The countback used for individuals will be:
If the two players on equal score played each other then the one with the higher score from that game places higher otherwise it is based on the sum of opponents scores and if still tied then the player who has the most 10-0 results.

  • All rulings by the umpire are final.

  • By entering the competition a player agrees to abide by all rules of the competition organisers.

  • If a player on a Regional team must play the umpire (ie receives a bye) then their score for that round for Regional team purposes is taken to be the average of their game scores in the other rounds.

  • If a player arrives late for a competition game without an exceptional reason (discuss with the umpire) they will be subject to the following cumulative penalties:

    • More than 10 minutes late: Their opponent may elect to be attacker or defender (roll dice normally to determine time of day/weather)

    • More than 20 minutes late: After writing deployment orders they must deploy their entire army before their opponent deploys any commands.

    • More than 30 minutes late: They must forfeit the game 110-0.

  • If a team member has to leave the competition for whatever reason then the remaining members of the team may pick a substitute player as follows:

    • For a Regional team any player who would be normally eligible for the team may be picked. If the player picked is a member of an independent team then their scores are no longer considered for the independent team.

    • For an Independent team any player who is not currently assigned to a team.
